CALL FOR PAPERS
Mexican Art
and Its Collections in Europe (16th-21st Centuries): Interwoven Histories

The Institute of Art History at the University of Wrocław invites scholars, curators, and museum professionals to participate in an international online conference dedicated to the presence of Mexican art in the European cultural context.

Mexican art, present in Europe from colonial times to the present day, constitutes a fascinating example of transcontinental artistic exchange. Its functioning in the European context – from historical collections to contemporary exhibitions – represents a complex process of meaning-making, interpretation, and reinterpretation. European museums, galleries, and private collections not only gathered works of Mexican art but actively participated in shaping its image and understanding in European cultural consciousness.

The conference aims to critically reflect on these processes by combining research perspectives with institutional experience. We are interested in both historical collecting and exhibition strategies, as well as contemporary attempts to reinterpret the assembled collections and new methodologies for their study and presentation.
